Stem cell treatment helps boy with cerebral palsy

September 12, 2009 – Alex Paul of the Albany Democrat-Herald interviews a family who discusses their four-year-old boy’s progress after receiving a stem cell treatment at Duke University in May. Since his parents banked the boy’s umbilical cord blood at birth, they were able to treat him using his own stem cells.

Oxygen-deprived at birth and diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Dylan Cain cannot walk on his own and has limited vision. A few months ago, his vocabulary was limited to a half-dozen words, including "dada." Dylan’s parents say they have seen considerable improvement in Dylan's speech, cognitive skills, vision and leg movement since he received the stem cell treatment.

"These are the largest gains he's made at any time in his life," said Dylan’s father, Mark. "Usually we see progress in very tiny steps over many months. These are like giant steps," he added.
