The Miracles of Stem Cells: The Last Fifty Years
Stem cells have been a significant part of living organisms since life began,
yet it is only within the last fifty years that stem cells have been recognized
for their amazing properties. It is these vital properties that have become the
primary focus of study by researchers and scientists from around the world. Since
the very first bone marrow transplant in the 1950's, to the 1980's and '90's,
when more than 16,000 stem cell transplants were performed to treat leukemia
and immune system disease, research into regenerative cellular therapies for
a wide range of human diseases has rapidly advanced. In this decade, for example,
more than 2,000 scientific research papers on stem cells have been published
each year. Most recently, medical researchers have discovered adult stem cells
in the endometrial lining of the uterus. C'elle menstrual stem cells appear to
have characteristics similar to those of human endometrial stem cells. However,
unlike stem cells collected from the uterus, C'elle menstrual stem cells are
easily harvested in a pain-free, safe and non-invasive manner.
